the ship must move away from the quay, be moored to the buoys, and have nobody on board except the passengers and the crew. As the steamer was not ready at 4 o'clock, the quarantine officers went off to visit some sailing ships that were on the point of departure.

As a consequence, though the steamer was ready at 4.55, and whistled repeatedly, it was not till 5.30 that the doctors were alongside.

There were two doctors and two doctoresses in the boat, as well as men to disembark the soiled linen of the crew, (there were no 3rd class passengers).

First of all the ship's officers were medically examined in the Captain's cabin and chart-room. Then the crew were all examined in twos in one side of the forecastle.

Then, while the male passengers were being examined by the two doctors in the Captain's rooms, the two lady doctors proceeded to examine the lady passengers and the children in the ladies cabin. Though I was able to help in this particular case, and expedite the examination considerably by interpreting for the doctors.
